In Greece Boehringer Ingelheim has been present for more than half a century. Today it is the only multinational pharmaceutical company that has maintained its own unit of production of innovative medicines in Greece since 1975. Boehringer Ingelheim Ellas is a leader in exporting innovative medicines. With exports to 70 countries, it represents 2.2% of Greece’s exports regardless of sector. The company has a strong social footprint:  According to Wifor institute report, published June 2019, Boehringer Ingelheim’s direct contribution to Greece’s GDP in 2018 amounted to about 8% of the Greek pharmaceutical industry. Including spillover effects, BI contributed almost €310 m of Gross Value Added in 2018 (compared to 2014 with €170 m).  Manolis Mitakis was born in Piraeus in 1965. He is a graduate of Pharmacy School of the University of Patras.

 Manolis joined Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals since 1990. He began his career as a Medical Rep He then moved to the position of Product manager in respiratory and cardiology products (1992-1994). The company then promoted him to the position of International Product Manager in the company’s headquarters. (1994-1997). Returning from Germany, he took over the management of the respiratory division of the company; in 2007 he was appointed head of the market access division. Since 2013, he is the head of the company’s Corporate Affairs department (Communications & public affairs), while since 2018 he has been also responsible for Patients’ Associations advocacy. Since 2021 he has been Boehringer Ingelheim Hellas’s ambassador to sustainable development (SD4G).

 He has been involved in the field of health communications between Doctors, Pharmacists and Patients, and is an author of 5 books in the fields of pharmacy counseling, pharmaceutical care, and patients’ communication. He is a member of the Hellenic Pharmaceutical Society and had been elected dean of the board of Hellenic Pharmacists association. He is also a member and ex-vice president of Hellenic Society of Ethnopharmacology, supporting sustainability for indigenous cultures as a source of innovative medicines.

 Manolis has published articles on pharmaceutical policy, marketing, and pharmaceutical counseling in specialized industry journals, as well as articles on the history of the medicines in various newspapers and magazines, trying to communicate the science of Medicines to patients and society, and facilitate in diseases awareness. He is an invited speaker in the subject of Ethnopharmacology at the postgraduate students of Pharmacology, Medical school, Democritus University of Thrace.
